Marine Radio - What Call Channel?

Good day folks,

Debi and I are looking forward to the FIRST trip since becoming official members of TBSK. We're referring to the paddle Sunday morning and picnic following. The weather looks questionable but we're hoping Tampa is on the leeward side of the state and it won't keep the group from paddling ??? <grin>

Also, please forgive our ignorance but as the "new people to Florida" can we ask what channel the local paddling community uses? In the Pacific Northwest most paddle groups used 69 (non-commercial channel) but if possible we'd like to know so we can set (program) the channel into our call button. (I know you can scan through all the channels, but it helps to have the right channel programed so it's easy to find when needed).

Thank you
Wade

Welcome to TBSK ! We're glad to have you and look forward to paddling with you. As to your VHF question, we don't have a "standard" monitoring channel. Most of us use channel 27 for our radio checks - it produces an automated playback of your call and is sponsored by Sea Tow. We generally agree on a channel at the start of any offshore trip when we have multiple handhelds in use. Otherwise I think most local paddlers leave the units on "scan".

Phil
