Hello,
I am a new Member. My wife and I are moving from Beaufort SC where I have done a good amount of salt water paddling but not too much fresh. I am looking forward taking advantage of all the paddling here in Central Florida.
We are moving to Mount Dora.
A few questions as a new transplant:
How do you spot/ deal with gators?
What are the best times of year for paddling?
What would be your suggestions for a first paddle?

Hi Everyone,
Glad to be here. Last week I excaped the rain and went to Cayo Costa down near Ft. Mayers. 12 miles to the island by way of cabage key. Camped over night, lots of shells,beautiful trip. only 7 mile return trip. Most weekends spent on the Harris chain. See ya on the water.

I havent seen it since the rains so I am sure it is nasty.
Have you ever been to Trout Lake? I saw some other paddlers doing it one day. It too has gators the size of ....well.... BIG. hahahah

I wouldnt do ANY of the Harris Chain of Lakes. They are much too nasty and full of gators bigger than any boat.
Try Lake Norris. It is very pretty. There are several others that I will post as local spots for all to enjoy.

I'm in Tavares so really Lake County is what I consider local or close by. I'm willing to drive but sometimes it can get old filling the tank every time I want to go paddling. I like the larger lakes around here but I know a lot of folks prefer the shade of the springs. Still have a lot to learn about all the local put ins, etc. Does anyone else around here paddle Lake Eustis/Harris/Dora, etc? See you on the water if so!

Yes, I've seen some big gators but no bigger than the 10-12 footers I saw when I did the St Johns River. Perhaps it is foolish but I find the drive to the put-in far more dangerous than my time on the water with the alligators.
