Floatation
bags are an easy way to make any kayak safer. A floatation bag is
a PVC-coated nylon bag that is inserted into the bow and stern of
the kayak provide buoyancy in the event of a capsize.
Floatation bags are important even if your kayak has waterproof
bulkheads as hatch covers may accidentally come undone, causing
the compartment to flood. In a flooded kayak, floatation bags displace
water which means that you will do a lot less pumping to empty the
kayak.
For touring kayakers, some floatation bags have dual chambers and
a large opening allowing you to use the bag for dry storage of gear.
